Shofuso house. Wallpaper inspiration heaven!

This spring I have a residency with the Philadelphia mural arts program! My job is to create and install a wallpaper-like mural at a community center in the Mayfair neighborhood of Philadelphia. I’m instructing a group of 15 middle school students in drawing, wood block carving, and printing. We are studying traditional Japanese woodblock printing and yesterday travelled to the Shofuso house in Philadelphia. The house, built in Japan and shipped to the U.S. in 1957, is an exact replica of a 17th century Japanese mansion. The house, grounds and garden provided an incredible source of inspiration for our wallpaper. Thank you shofuso!
